Lip blush healing, day by day
Lip blush looks bold, dark and slightly swollen for the first few days, then goes through dryness, flaking and a faded "ghosting" stage before the true colour settles at around six weeks. Every stage is normal — and how you look after your lips decides much of the final result.
The healing stages
| When | What you'll see | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1–3 | Swelling and strong, bright colour — darker than the shade you chose | Keep lips clean and moisturised; avoid getting them wet or sweating |
| Days 3–5 | Lips feel dry and tight; colour still looks too dark | Keep moisturising; drink through a straw; no spicy food |
| Days 4–7 | Light scabbing and peeling | Don't pick or peel — let flakes come away on their own |
| Weeks 2–4 | "Ghosting": colour looks faded or patchy as new skin forms | Be patient — the colour comes back up |
| Week 6 | Your true shade has settled | Time for your 6–12 week top-up |
Why your lips look too dark at first
Straight after treatment, pigment sits in the surface layers of the lip along with a little swelling, so colour looks brighter and heavier than it will heal. As the surface skin renews over the first week, that excess comes away and the colour softens.
The ghosting stage
Around the second week, many clients panic because their colour seems to have disappeared. A new layer of skin has formed over the pigment and hides it. Over the following weeks the skin settles and the colour shows through again.
Aftercare that protects your result
- Avoid getting your lips wet or sweating while they heal.
- Avoid spicy food, and drink through a straw.
- Don't touch, pick or peel scabs.
- Avoid kissing and keep your lips moisturised.
- No lipstick or lip products other than your aftercare balm until healed.
If you've ever had cold sores, taking antiviral medication for 5 days before your appointment helps prevent an outbreak during healing.
When to get in touch
Message your artist if redness, swelling or heat increase after day three, if the area feels hot, painful or is weeping, or if anything worries you. Flaking, tightness and looking too dark in week one are all normal.
